What is Another Life?
Another Life is a hospitality furniture brand from Bali. We make furniture from repurposed teak, designed in a Danish tradition, shipped flat and built to be kept for a very long time.
Where is Another Life based?
The company is based in Bali. Every piece is made by hand in Indonesia.
Who founded Another Life?
Stine Palm and Magnus Palm. It is a family company, and the idea was born in Bali, where the family moved partly for Green School.
What does the name mean?
The teak we use has already lived one life, in a house, a bridge or a boat. Every piece we make from it is meant to keep going: repaired, moved and handed on to its next owner.
What is SATU?
SATU is our first collection: The Chair, The Sun Lounger, The Bench, The Lounge Chair, The Side Table, The Coffee Table and The Table. The name is the Indonesian word for one, because every piece shares the same wood, finish and way of building.
What is the furniture made from?
Repurposed teak: timber that has already lived a life, often in old joglo houses. We give it another life through Danish design and Indonesian hands.
What is Shou Sugi Ban?
Shou Sugi Ban, or yakisugi in Japanese, is a centuries-old technique of charring wood with flame. In Japan it was made for cedar, a softwood. We use it on a hardwood, repurposed teak: we burn the surface, then finish it with natural oil. The result is a deep black colour and a texture you can feel.
Why do you burn a hardwood?
Because we wanted to see what an old Japanese idea could do for teak in the tropics. Charring gives the surface a protective, characterful skin, and the idea is to help the wood handle strong sun. We finish it with natural oil, which soaks into the wood instead of sitting on top as a coating.
What is a joglo?
A joglo is a traditional Javanese house: a tall roof carried by four big teak pillars, put together with joinery so it can be taken apart and moved. Many old joglos are making way for concrete houses. Much of the teak we use comes from houses like these.
What is ulin?
Ulin, or Borneo ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri), is one of the hardest woods in the world. It is so dense it sinks in water, and it built boats, bridges and piers for generations. It grows very slowly and is protected, so new ulin can no longer be exported from Indonesia. We work only with reclaimed ulin, traced and documented. Our first ironwood samples are made, and it is in development as our second material.
Why does every piece look a little different?
Because the teak has a history. Marks and nail holes from the wood's first life are part of its character, and we keep them visible as a quiet record of where it has been. Strength always comes first, so each piece is built to last.
Is Another Life furniture sustainable?
Sustainability guides every decision we make: repurposed teak, a flame-darkened finish with natural oil, flat-pack shipping, and furniture designed to be repaired rather than replaced. We believe the most sustainable piece is the one you keep for decades, so that is what we make.
How do you show where the wood comes from?
Today we tell it as the story of our wood: old houses, bridges and boats across Indonesia. We are also building the Another Life Passport, a QR tracing system that gives every piece its own story, from its first life to its next.
What happens when a hotel no longer needs the furniture?
It comes apart. Undo the bolts and every piece packs flat, can be stored, and goes back together for its next place or owner. If a part is worn, you replace that part, not the piece. Our furniture is made to be used, never stacked in a corner, and never sent to landfill.
Is the furniture recyclable?
It is solid wood finished with natural oil, so at the very end of its life it can be. But we hope it never gets there. Recycling ends a product's life and takes energy to make something new. We would rather a piece is kept, repaired, moved and passed on, like a glass bottle that is refilled instead of melted down.
Do you plant trees?
It is part of our mission. We want to plant new trees for the wood we use, give back to the communities and makers behind our furniture, and do it with partners who care about the same things. We have just started, so we say it as a goal, not as something we already do. If you run a planting or community project, we would love to hear from you.
Can the furniture be used outdoors?
Yes. It is made for hospitality spaces indoors and out, from dining rooms and lobbies to pools, terraces and gardens.
How is the furniture shipped?
Flat-packed. Every piece travels knocked down, so more fits in each container, and it is bolted together on site.
What holds the furniture together?
Stainless steel bolts, three at every main joint, screwed into threaded inserts in the wood. Hardware is often the weakest, cheapest part of furniture. We made it one of the strongest, so the joints can be taken apart and tightened again for decades.
Can the furniture be repaired?
Yes, and that is the heart of the design. Parts are bolted together, so any single part can be replaced and the piece goes straight back into service. It can be taken apart and put back together again and again.
What is the Another Life Passport?
The tracing system we are building. A small QR code on the furniture opens the story of that piece: where its wood came from and what it was before, who made it, how it travelled, and how to care for it and repair it. When a piece moves to a new owner, its story moves with it. We will share more as the system takes shape.
Who do you make furniture for?
Boutique hotels, resorts, restaurants and cafés, and the architects and interior designers who work with them. We love working with the people who shape what a place stands for.
Is Another Life Danish?
Yes. Another Life is a Danish family company. Design runs in the family: we come from a line of architects and furniture makers, and that heritage shapes everything we draw. We are Danish at heart and inspired by the world. Every piece is made by hand in Indonesia, close to the material and the makers.
How much does it cost?
We price every project individually, ex works Indonesia. Tell us about your space and we will come back with a proposal.
How do I order?
Send us a message with your space, the pieces you like and your timeline. We will reply with options, pricing and lead times.
